In the 21st identity is increasingly commodified and human experience is filtered through constructed social personas, the essence of what it means to be truly human stands under profound threat. This dissertation investigates the dehumanising forces surged in modernity by focusing on three interrelated symptoms: narcissism—the excessive preoccupation with the self and its projected social image; sexuality—the commodification of intimacy and interpersonal relationships; and materialism—the pursuit of wealth and social prestige as a means of self-validation. Drawing primarily on the fiction and non-fiction of D. H. Lawrence, this study foregrounds his prophetic critique of modern industrial-capitalist society that resonates in the present era. Lawrence’s emphasis on spiritual awareness, authentic being, and the transformative potential of interpersonal relationships serves as a vital counterpoint to the reduction of individuals into mechanical roles, social images and economic functions. Complementing Lawrence’s vision, the work of social psychologist Erich Fromm is employed to deepen the analysis of psychological pathologies—particularly alienation, instrumentalism, and the erosion of genuine selfhood—which Lawrence intuitively foresaw.Focusing on The Rainbow and Women in Love, argues that Lawrence, in alignment with Fromm’s later theories, offers a profound diagnosis of the modern dehumanizing, malaise more directly corroborated by British sociologist Zygmunt Bauman’s theories of liquid modernity at the heart of the present age. Through an interdisciplinary methodology that integrates literary analysis with social psychology, the study demonstrates how these thinkers, pioneered by D.H. Lawrence, reveal the disintegration of the self under the pressures of late modernity.In a world increasingly shaped by image culture, performative identities, and existential emptiness masked by material abundance, this work positions literature as a prophetic voice against dehumanisation. It offers a reflective exploration of the ongoing struggle for authenticity in an age dominated by commodification and conformity.

خلال التركیز على ثلاثة أعراض مترابطة: النرجسیة — أي الانشغال المفرط بالذات وصورتھا الاجتماعیة ال ُمعلنة؛ والجنس — أي تسلیع الحمیمیة والعلاقات الشخصیة؛ والمادیة — أي السعي وراء الثروة والمكانة الاجتماعیة كوسیلة .لتحقیق الذات وتأكیدھا

في عالم بات مش ّكلاً على نحو متزاید بثقافة الصورة، والھویات الأدائیة، والفراغ الوجودي المتخفي خلف وفرة مادیة، تطرح ھذه الدراسة الأدب كصوت نبوي في وجھ التشیيء ونزع الإنسانیة. إنھا تقدم استكشافًا جدیدًا ومتأملاً لصراع
الإنسان المعاصر من أجل الأصالة في زمن تحكمھ السلعنة والتطابق الجماعي. وللقارئ الساعي لفھم تقاطعات الأدب وعلم .النفس والأسئلة الفلسفیة للوجود الحدیث، تُعد ھذه الأطروحة إسھا ًما رصینًا ومؤث ًرا في دراسة الذات ومآزقھا
