This research juxtaposes popular culture and canonical literature, by extension J. F. Cooper’s The Leatherstocking Tales to Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter. The aim is to trace the evolution of the archetypal American Hero and the American Myth from the 19th Century canonical literature to the 21st Century popular culture. The study relied on Richard Slotkin’s myth of “Regeneration through Violence”, John G. Cawelti’s concept of “Formula” and popular myths of violence and Carl Gustav Jung’s “Process of Individuation”. The results proved that popular culture is worthy of academic investigation and the archetypal hero Natty Bumppo evolves to become the popular hero Dexter Morgan.

يقارن هذا البحث الثقافة الشعبية والأدب الكنسي بالامتداد تأليف جيه إف كوبر The Leatherstocking Tales إلى Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter. . الهدف هو تتبع تطور النموذج الأصلي للبطل الأمريكي والأسطورة الأمريكية من الأدب الكنسي في القرن التاسع عشر إلى الثقافة الشعبية في القرن الحادي والعشرين. اعتمدت الدراسة على أسطورة ريتشارد سلوتكين عن "التجديد من خلال العنف" ، ومفهوم جون جي كاولتي عن "الصيغة" والأساطير الشائعة عن العنف و "عملية التفرد" لكارل غوستاف يونغ. أثبتت النتائج أن الثقافة الشعبية تستحق البحث الأكاديمي. تطور البطل النموذجي ناتي بومبو ليصبح البطل الشعبي ديكستر مورغان.

The present reader-oriented study deals with the later texts of Cormac McCarthy. In particular, No Country for Old Men, The Road and The Sunset Limited share a remarkable leaning towards minimalist style and ambivalent spirituality which, in turn, affects the reading experience. The challenges encountered while reading such texts could be best understood by resort to Wolfgang Iser’s and Hans R. Jauss’ theories of aesthetic response and aesthetic reception, respectively. The novels' generic, stylistic, moral and spiritual indeterminacies are, in fact, a space which—simultaneously—marks the author’s withdrawal from the text and invites the reader to fulfill a set of aesthetic roles. In other words, a successful interaction between the texts in question and their reader is realized through the latter’s responsive involvement, identification, independence and introspection.

      تهتم هذه الدراسة بالنصوص الأدبية لكورماك مكارثي و تُسلط الضوء على تفاعل القارئ مع روايات "ليس بلدا للمسنين"(2005) ، "الطريق" و "قطار الغروب"(2006). تشترك الروايات الاخيرة في ميلها الى أُدنوية الاسلوب الروائي واِزدواجية المعتقد الروحي بحيث تُشكل تحديات لقُرائها . يلجا البحث ،بغرض فهم  هذه التحديات بشكل أفضل، إلى نظرية المتلقي التي تسهل فهم العلاقة بين القارئ والنص. في هذا السياق، يُقدم الكاتبان و الناقدان الالمانيان هانز ر.ياوس و فولفغانغ إيزر جملة من المفاهيم النقدية من اجل تحليل خيارات الكاتب النصية وانعكاساتها على توقعات و ردة فعل المتلقي حيث تُمثل فراغات النص البنيوية ،المعنوية والقصدية فضاءً تتراجع فيه سلطة الكاتب و يُفسح فيه المجال للقارئ. اعتماد مكارثي  في اعماله على اسلوب روائي يتميز بالإيجازو الحذف ،التناقض و الغموض يٌساهم في تحفيز القارئ على الاختيار، التحكيم، التنسيق، الاستكشاف و التأمل. من خلال شرح تجاوب القارئ الضمني مع التعقيدات الأسلوبية والدلالية في الروايات الثلاث تكشف الاطروحة عن  تعزيز مشاركة القارئ و مضاعفة دوره التأويلي، التصوري و الابداعي.
