This thesis revisits the Vietnam War through postcolonial lens in order to expose how American captivity narratives have continuously shaped, sustained, and repackaged imperial assumptions about Vietnam. The representation of the Vietnamese is a focal point in this study, which examines the different interpretations of the war and the ways
in which Vietnamese are depicted through captivity narratives, with the aim of amplifying the perspectives of the indigenous people. By revisiting the Vietnam War through a postcolonial lens, we are able to challenge the assumptions and narratives that
have shaped our understanding of the conflict. This approach not only provides a more nuanced and complex interpretation of the Vietnam War, but also highlights the importance of considering the perspectives of all parties involved in the conflict. It explores how the early protestant faith and puritan captivity narratives continue to influence contemporary captivity narratives, extending beyond personal experiences to that of ideology. This study aims to deconstruct colonial stereotypes embedded in captivity narratives about Vietnam to show that these images legitimized military intervention and colonial project. Through this work, the evolution of the American hero is traced through demonstrating how texts shape and reshaped by the contexts in order to serve the American foreign policy and political agenda. It also explains how the
American POWs positioned themselves as heroic figures versus the exotic other, portraying women as sexual objects in need of liberation to justify colonialism and expansion. This research delineates how media coverage of the Vietnam War became one of its key lessons that influenced and shaped the U.S. foreign policy. Readings of captivity narratives further illustrate how narrative healing becomes a contested space, where captives attempt to reclaim agency even as publishers and policymakers appropriate their stories to serve new geopolitical purposes. This study reframes captivity narratives as dynamic instruments of empire: far from innocent adventure tales, they are strategic scripts that adapt to the requisites of any given time and repeatedly reinscribe Vietnam as a space requiring Western tutelage.

تعيد هذه الأطروحة النظر في حرب فيتنام من خلال عدسة ما بعد الاستعمار، بهدف كشف كيف استمرت السرديات الأمريكية عن الأسر في تشكيل ودعم وإعادة إنتاج الافتراضات الإمبريالية حول فيتنام. تمثل صورة الفيتناميين محورًا أساسيًا في هذه الدراسة، التي تتناول التفسيرات المختلفة للحرب والطرق التي يتم من خلالها تصوير الفيتناميين في سرديات الأسر، وذلك بهدف إبراز وجهات نظر السكان الأصليين. من خلال إعادة النظر في حرب فيتنام من منظور ما بعد استعماري، يمكننا تحدي الافتراضات والسرديات التي شكّلت فهمنا لهذا الصراع. ولا يقتصر هذا النهج على تقديم تفسير أكثر تعقيدًا وعمقًا للحرب، بل يسلط الضوء أيضًا على أهمية أخذ وجهات نظر جميع الأطراف المشاركة في الاعتبار.
تستكشف الأطروحة كيف أن الإيمان البروتستانتي المبكر وسرديات الأسر لدى الطهريين ما زالت تؤثر في السرديات
المعاصرة للأسر، بحيث تتجاوز التجربة الشخصية لتصبح أيديولوجية. وتهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تفكيك الصور النمطية
الاستعمارية المتجذرة في سرديات الأسر حول فيتنام، لإظهار كيف ساهمت هذه الصور في إضفاء الشرعية على التدخل
العسكري والمشروع الاستعماري. ومن خلال قراءة جديدة تاريخية لهذه السرديات، تتبع الأطروحة تطور صورة البطل
الأمريكي وتوضح كيف أن النصوص تتشكل ويُعاد تشكيلها حسب السياقات لخدمة السياسة الخارجية والأجندة السياسية الأمريكية.ومن خلال عدسة الاستشراق، يتضح أن أسرى الحرب الأمريكيين قد قدّموا أنفسهم كأبطال في مواجهة "الآخر الغريب"، مصوّرين النساء كأدوات جنسية بحاجة إلى "تحرير" لتبرير الاستعمار والتوسع. كما تبحث الدراسة في الاغتراب المزدوج للجنود الأمريكيين في فيتنام والصدمة النفسية التي عانوا منها بعد عودتهم إلى وطن تزعزعت فيه القيم الأخلاقية التي كانت راسخة لديهم، وهو ما تجلى في اضطراب ما بعد الصدمة والشعور بالاغتراب.
وباستخدام نظرية تحديد الأجندة، تُظهر الأطروحة كيف لعبت وسائل الإعلام دورًا مهمًا في تحديد أولويات الرأي العام من خلال التغطية والتقارير التي نقلت الصراع إلى الداخل الأمريكي، مما ساهم في تحويل الرأي العام ضد الحرب وأدى إلى انطلاق مظاهرات واحتجاجات. وتُبرز كيف أصبحت تغطية وسائل الإعلام لحرب فيتنام من أهم الدروس المستفادة التي أثرت وشكلت السياسة الخارجية الأمريكية.وتسلّط الدراسة الضوء أيضًا على أحد إرث الحرب وهو وجود "الأمريسيين" – أبناء الجنود الأمريكيين من أمهات فيتناميات – والذين يهدد وجودهم الحدود الصارمة بين المحتل والمحتَل. وتقدم مفهومي التهجين والمساحة الثالثة كمفاهيم ما بعد استعمارية لفهم كيف أن أصواتهم المهمّشة تكشف كيف تترك سرديات الأسر ندوبًا اجتماعية عميقة: فهي بالنسبة للأمريكيين تذكير حي بحرب عبثية، وبالنسبة للفيتناميين تجسيد للوصمة وصراع لم يُشفَ بعد.وتوضح قراءات سرديات الأسر كيف تصبح عملية "الشفاء السردي" موقعًا للصراع، حيث يسعى الأسرى لاستعادة الوكالة رغم أن الناشرين وصناع السياسات يستغلون قصصهم لخدمة أهداف جيوسياسية جديدة. تعيد هذه الدراسة تأطير سرديات الأسر باعتبارها أدوات ديناميكية للإمبراطورية: فهي ليست مجرد حكايات مغامرات بريئة، بل نصوص استراتيجية تتكيّف مع متطلبات كل مرحلة زمنية، وتعيد بشكل متكرر ترسيخ فيتنام كمكان يحتاج إلى وصاية غربية.
