Our exploratory investigation aims to be highly descriptive of the cultural element and its understanding or interpretation by the Algerian students when they handle EFL literary texts. Our purpose was to explore through a mixed-method, whether the teaching and learning of the target culture as well as bridging the gap between the native cultural identities of the EFL Algerian students with the EFL contexts presented in the literary works can raise the students’ awareness of their hindrance. Ultimately, we studied the connection between prejudices students may have and those found in EFL literary texts and the awareness of there being such a bias within both parties for that matter. The study was conducted at the English Department of the University of Algiers II, situated in Bouzaréah during the 2021-2022 & 2022-2023 academic years. Our findings allow us to affirm that the EFL students’ hindrance in target culture affects their successful interpretation of the text and impedes them in acquiring the necessary tools to interpret EFL literature. It also influences their overall commitment to literature study, as they do not have the target cultural proficiency that literature study requires. Results show Algerian students feel denied the freedom of personal interpretation.

يهدف بحثنا الاستكشافي إلى أن يكون وصفيًا بدرجة عالية للعنصر الثقافي وفهمه أو تفسيره من قبل الطلاب الجزائريين عندما يتعاملون مع النصوص الأدبية للغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. كان هدفنا هو الاستكشاف من خلال طريقة مختلطة، ما إذا كان تدريس وتعلم الثقافة المستهدفة وكذلك سد الفجوة بين الهويات الثقافية الأصلية للطلاب الجزائريين في اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية وسياقات اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية المقدمة في الأعمال الأدبية يمكن أن ترفع مستوى الطلاب. الوعي بعائقهم. في النهاية، قمنا بدراسة العلاقة بين التحيزات التي قد تكون لدى الطلاب وتلك الموجودة في النصوص الأدبية للغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية والوعي بوجود مثل هذا التحيز داخل كلا الطرفين في هذا الشأن. أجريت الدراسة بقسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة الجزائر الثانية ببوزريعة خلال العامين الدراسيين 2021-2022 و2022-2023. تتيح لنا النتائج التي توصلنا إليها التأكيد على أن عوائق طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية في الثقافة المستهدفة تؤثر على تفسيرهم الناجح للنص وتعيقهم في اكتساب الأدوات اللازمة لتفسير أدب اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. كما أنه يؤثر أيضًا على التزامهم العام بدراسة الأدب، حيث ليس لديهم الكفاءة الثقافية المستهدفة التي تتطلبها دراسة الأدب. تظهر النتائج أن الطلاب الجزائريين يشعرون بالحرمان من حرية الترجمة الشفوية.
